Part 1 – “Tora, Tora, Tora!” – Pearl Harbor & the Coming of War

With the surprise Imperial Japanese Navy’s attack on U.S. military facilities on Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands on Sunday morning, 7 December 1941 followed by attacks on U.S. bases in the Philippine Islands, the United States was thrust into the Second World War. On the following day, the U.S. Congress passed a Declaration of War against the Japanese Empire; Germany and Italy soon declared war on the U.S., and thus, the nation was fully engaged in the war in Europe, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. The first lecture in the World War II in the Pacific series addresses the Pearl Harbor/Oahu attack and the first few months of the war as the U.S. struggled to recover from the loss of the bulk of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and the Pacific air forces.
